Specsavers to open at The Mall shopping centre with scheme now close to full occupancy

The Mall shopping centre in Armagh has received a significant boost following the recent opening of Specsavers at the retail scheme

This latest letting follows the arrivals of Faith Jewellers and Hays Travel, reinforcing The Mall’s status as a thriving retail destination in the heart of Armagh.

CBRE NI is the letting and management agent for the scheme, which was acquired by Turkington in 2023 and comprises approximately 63,000 sq ft of prime retail accommodation anchored by a 49,000 sq ft Sainsbury’s. It is also home to several popular high street brands including Semi-Chem and Hallmark, with 398 dedicated on-site car parking spaces providing added convenience for shoppers.

Stephen Smith, Associate Director at CBRE NI, commented:

“We are thrilled to welcome Specsavers to The Mall. This latest arrival marks the successful culmination of a targeted asset management strategy which has seen the centre go from strength to strength throughout the past year.

“Specsavers is a household name with a trusted reputation, and the brand’s decision to invest in Armagh is a significant endorsement of the local market.

“Retail occupancy levels across Northern Ireland’s prime regional centres have held up well, particularly in schemes that offer strong footfall, accessibility and essential services. With a strong tenant mix, The Mall continues to meet the evolving needs of both retailers and consumers.”

The Specsavers letting provides an insight into the resilience of Northern Ireland’s retail sector, which continues to adapt and perform well despite macroeconomic headwinds. Demand for quality retail space remains steady, especially in convenience-led centres anchored by grocery, food & beverage, and essential services.

Colm Campbell, Ophthalmic Director at Specsavers Craigavon, Portadown and Armagh commented:

“Specsavers’ decision to open a new store in Armagh reflects our confidence in the city and our commitment to meeting the growing demand for accessible eye and hearing care.

“The Mall offers a well-connected, convenient location for our customers, and we’re excited to bring our expert team and services to the heart of the local community.”

The opening of Specsavers is expected to generate further footfall and provide a valuable new service to the local community, reinforcing The Mall’s role as a key shopping destination in the region.

Gary Turkington, Operations Director at Turkington, owners of The Mall, added:

“Since acquiring The Mall in 2023, our focus has been on enhancing the tenant mix and maximising the scheme’s potential.

“The arrival of Specsavers is not only commercially significant but will also enhance the day-to-day retail experience for local residents.

“We are proud that the scheme is close to full occupancy and look forward to seeing The Mall continue to thrive.”
